The 2mm pad thats is use to set the proper Angle of Engagement.
By adjusting the AOE, we want to achieve a situation in which the first tooth of the gear has as much contact as possible with the first tooth of the piston.

This improves the distribution of transmitted forces and prevents premature wear.
